Fossiliferous dolostone

Dolostone units are dark gray, very hard cemented and slightly fossiliferous with bivalves. Shale units are gray in color, calcareous, and slope-forming. The maximum flooding surface of this sequence is characterized by limestone and shale, whereas its HST is represented by intercalations of dolostones, dolomitic limestone, sandstone, and shale..

The Rosendale Dolostone is an orange-buff weathering argillaceous non-fossiliferous dolostone representing a hypersaline tidal-flat environment. The Rosendale Member conformably overlies the Wilbur Limestone where present but otherwise disconformably overlies the Binnewater Sandstone to the south, where the Rosendale is a Sandy fossiliferous dolostone microfacies showing mouldic porosity in bioclasts and quartz embedded in dolomitic cement. Dolostone. Dolostone is a fine-grained sedimentary rock composed primarily of dolomite, a calcium and magnesium carbonate mineral. Dolostone is similar to limestone and is in some cases formed secondarily from chemically-altered limestone. Whereas limestone has a high calcium content, dolostone has a high calcium and magnesium content. It formed from a soft lime mud originally made of tiny grains of CaCO 3. Many dolostones are micritic. Many were probably deposited as micritic limestones and were altered to dolostone after burial. Click for an extra close close-up. It is clear that some original structures (animal burrows?) are preserved in this rock.Dolostone (Limestone) The principal mineral of limestone is calcite (CaCO3), a form of calcium carbonate. Dolostone is quite similar to limestone, but is composed mostly of the mineral dolomite (CaMg (CO3)2). Both are sedimentary rocks that occur as thin to massive beds of fine- to coarse-grained rock. Their color is typically some shade of ...The coastal dolostone lithofacies includes dolomitized upper outer-ramp and possibly, middle outer-ramp lithofacies. It is not present in the downdip portion of the study area.
